1: Executive summary

In Somalia, More than half of the population (4 million) is believed to live along the two rivers where Schistosomiasis is thought to be endemic due to the availability of water points containing live infecting cercariae and community behaviors to water contacts. School age children are the most affected due to their water contaminated contact behaviors.

A total number of 2350 of clinically diagnosed urinary schistosomiasis in which 1548 (66%) were male and 802 of female (44%) were treated in 4 Districts of Marka, Kurtur Warey, Jamama and Balcad during July 2008.  An intensity based intervention was not implemented due to the limited budget.

1162 (49%) of the treated cases were children. Most of the cases were boys. Boys are often more engaged and active in playing or swimming at the stream water than females and this practice boys are more exposed the risk of infection.

Praziquantel is donated by WHO Somalia and the Operational Cost (0.5USD per patient) is paid by community and individuals as a contribution to the initiative.

All Total cases (July 07-July 08) = 19 962

 All Total cases (July 07-July 08) = 19 962
